The reason for using two mics on a Leslie (upper, lower) has to do with the realities of mic'ing a Leslie in a live venue: 1) In order to get a good representation of both the horn and drum with a single mic, the mic must be 3-5 feet away (or more) from the cabinet. If one attempts to place a single mic close to the cabinet, but NOT pointed at either rotor, the sound will be somewhat muffled. 2) Placing a mic 3-5 feet away from ANY live source leaves an opening for bleed-through of other instruments, making adjusting the organ volume very difficult.
In a studio environment, it may be possible to place a mic the required distance from the Leslie, yet keep background noise to a minimum. Some engineers actually prefer this approach. In a live environment, this is rarely possible.
