Subject:RE: Harmonic Beating
Beating it more-
I recall a conversation at dinner with Dave Amels about Hammonds and
tuning issues. He did a lot of research into the frequencies of each
note and the integer math that went into the generator design when he
developed the V5. If you look at the generator frequencies, it is
impossible not have beating between certain notes. When I got home I
promptly connected an oscilloscope to my A100's G terminal and there
they were, beating away just as the math predicts-- not a subjective
issue at all. When you see the beating you will easily hear it from that
time on---maybe not a good thing for some folks to do.
The only way to totally get rid of beating is with an active system that
looks at the combination of notes being played and micro tunes "on the
fly".
Fortunately, as Bruce has pointed out, it is a matter of degree.
Regards
John F.

Subject: [CWSG] Harmonic Beating
Hi All,
Be careful about "going down a rat hole" with harmonic beating. The
Hammond-Suzuki XB-series had MAJOR problems with harmonic beating,
especially on drawbar settings with lots of black drawbars pulled out.
Neither the Electro nor the CX-3 have anything near that kind of issue.
In fact, while I admit that it's possible to hear some artifacts on
certain notes in certain octaves on my BX-3, I have to pay very close
attention to hear them. We're talking two different degrees of beating.
And remember, while there were beating problems with the XB-2 and its
brethren, there was also a lot of great music made with these keyboards!
Regards,
-BW
