Subject:Re: multi board rigs and system engineering mini rant
I really like the VR-760 also known as the V-Combo, and got one just
as they were going out of production. At first it seems to come as
close as possible to a one-keyboard solution, but Roland gets you in
the frying pan again with their engineering department (no players
allowed in the keyboard lab).
This board has an Organ section (like the VK8) including drawbars and
all the effects, a Piano section including a couple of good pianos
and Rhodes/Wurly emulations and effects, and a Synth section plus
effects. You can load 3-4 SRX cards and use them controlled - limited
(hint) - by the Synth section. But you can only use one sound at a
time from each section. If I want to use an SRX piano and SRX bass,
tough cookie, I can pick one or the other, but one of 'em has to be
from a different onboard section, because the Synth's resources are
tied up at one sound per section. And the Organ doesn't have a
separate output for a Leslie or rotary amp, so you have to use the
VK8-like onboard simulation, which is good, but what if you want to
run a rotary/Leslie speaker?
I could go on but for now I just scratch my head and look at it in my
home "keyboard corner" and think, "There's got to be a way to get
around this." I don't think so yet, but if you're happy with the
onboard sounds - very good - and 4 X add-on SRX sounds - very good -
and can live with the "One from each third of the pie" approach; its
a KILLER MACHINE ;) Seriously!
ps- It's big for 76 keys, like "large" wide and deep. You'll be the
only player on your end of the stage for sure with two accomodating
long flat surfaces inviting a beer mug or coctail glass.
If I figure this out, I'll let you know and maybe there'll be an
eBay/Craigslist run on used VCombos?
mini-rant finished
