I think it may have already been mentioned but it bears repeating -
Find yourself a "vintage" Ultimate Support Systems A-frame stand.
They were made in silver and black finish, in two and three tiered
models. Put a wanted ad in your local musicians paper or search on
Ebay. I found a used, mint condition 2-tier stand for $40. It
allows complete freedom of adjustment.

I don't understand why these are stands no longer offered on the
market, I guess they're no longer "cool". I bought mine for exactly
the same reason you are seeking, plus it was the only stand that
allowed me to add my bass pedalboard where it needed to be. Can't
do that with any of the "X" stands out there now!
