Quite simply, I wrote an email to them asking if they would modify
their software to allow shallow triggering, and they immediately
replied that they would! A week later, I received a new controller
chip to swap in, and hey presto -- a D3M with a wonderful quick action
but yet NO double-triggering (from which the VK-8 suffers).

To switch it on, using the user manual PDF, you would change the
"velocity setting" from "Dynamic" (standard velocity-sensitive deep
triggering) to any one of the other fixed velocities (10-127).

I'm not sure yet whether or not Doepfer plan to make this upgrade a
standard feature in all new units, but I imagine after putting effort
into the modifications it would make sense. I told them there were
many other owners or potential owners looking for this functionality;
if you are one of them, write to the software team at software@doepfer.de.

You can get a list of regional US dealers from there, apparently. I
got mine from Thomann (http://www.thomann.de/gb/), a Europe-wide
retailer based in Germany, at the cost of about 395 Euros ($500).
