Good luck convincing your drummer to use those. I think the reason
why some drummers play so loud, is that they like that "compressed"
effect they hear so much in recordings. Your ears in a way, compress
loud sounds, and banging the heads hard, gives that effect, but for
everyone else around him, doesn't get that "effect".
A few suggestions to try, is to keep drummer in the back of the band,
or get a fold-up plexi-glass cage. Under most situations, good
control over how you play (18-inch strikes should be sufficient)
dynamically vs. hard and loud, will enable your drummer to be more
tasteful and keep a better rhythm in the end.
