Subject:RE: OT: Setting volumes in a band

the recordings aren't a good example to hear the level variations,
because they are modified (mostly with a compressor) in order you can
hear always the instruments. And if the organ player is the star, it
gets even worse (or better)...

Hi:

I relly enjoyed seeing this topic and glad it was raised. I am playing
in a trio, newly organized project (organ - guitar - drum) and the
guitar player and I are now trying to rehearse/play at a low volume
and becomming aware of the impact on so many aspects of the sound. I
very much like the suggestion or lowering the bass and the mid on the
guitar as the last recording was thick and not transparent. I also
need to figure out the two level system for the organ... comping level
and solo level... however when I listened to some older Jimmy Smith
recording I don't hear any change in his level at all it seems to be
set and unchanged.. so for today's rehearsal I will try that method.
Getting the sound right is described by the guitar player as the x-
factor... I am also trying the new(?) Samson USB mic today directly
into a laptop. C01U and see what happens...
I am interested in more comments on this subject..
