Subject:Re: OT: Setting volumes in a band
this is the same problem I have all the time.
I have learnd a few things.
the organ/keyboard sounds are mostley the sme frequency as the guitar
and bass.
with a few expeptions.. this is the original EP's and organs. they have
a higher overtone frequency but with enough low body to sound nice.
most digital keyboards sound not that well in the higher regions. and
most importand the keyboard amplifiers and monitors sounds like crap
compared to the quality of the samples in the keyboard. try to play your
keyboard over a hifi set and you know what I mean.
When the keyboard amp is turned up it get worse and at that time the
other band players come in rage against you! :-)
because a guitar amp is becoming more nice at a higher volume.....
there are a few options to obtain;
build a persplex cabine round the drum kit.
convince the guitar player he is better of with a oldfashion marshall
amp with pre tube amp. (the combo amps do always have to sound loud at
higher frequencies).
Build or look for a very well monitor (and amp) which has a wide spread
of sound in the higher frequencies. (are ther any?)
And throw away the horndriver and replace it for dome thweeters (or add
them to your system) the highs become more nice and appear to be not too
loud....!
listen to our keyboard/sound source and analize the sound (quality) in
perspecive of a rock band.
I diceded to buy a Kurzweil because the sound is a bit thinner than the
most Japanese brands and the highs are a bit fuller than the others.
when playing on my own I miss some times the wramth of the sound but in
a band situation it stands up omongst the others.
tweak your sound while the others are playing and ask if you may tweak
there amps to.....??
maybe buy a EQ
turn down the lows and mids.
sometimes a bit more or less high is doing wonders.....
for the solo's take a midi controler pedal and program two sound stages
like a guitar player does with his pedal.
try this steps for fun and you will notice there is a lot to know, learn
and tell about it.
I asked a band lately if I may join them. one of the guitarists anwerd
it was not allowed by the sound engineer......
I anwerd that had a wise sound engineer. :-)
