Subject:Re: M sound vs B sound
I personally the M-3....however there are some major sound differences.
For one, the vibrato line box is a bit different so you cannot get the full
C-3 chorus vibrato effect.
The preamp, if you could call it that is interconnected to the power amp so
there is always the issue of having to adjust the signal of the power amp out
to the leslie or whatever amp you use.
The upper drawbar tones also do not extend into the upper octaves in the
same way a full console does.
M series organ generally do have less crosstalk than console Hammonds....and
some players have been attracted to that.
Beyond all this , some great music has been made on spinets. Early Steve
Winwood, Booker T. and Procol Harum all used M series spinets.
One of my favorite spinet players is Neil Larsen. I don't know if he still
plays his M-3 anymore, but what a player! He did a lot of recording with
guitarist Buzz Feiten in the 70's and 80's and I would definitely consider him one
of the greats on Hammond. He is also a great composer with an incredible
melodic sense. He is definitely in the league of Brian Auger and a few others in
the fusion genre, but Neil was a more prolific composer when he was active.
That we haven't been hearing much from him lately is a major loss.
