Subject: [CWSG] Another Road Box MKIII Sighting

I used My Speakeasy Road Box MKIII for the first time at a three-hour rehearsal.

This thing is just simply impressive as hell. It looks fantastic, it handles easily, and it just sounds killer. The guys in the band just went absolutely nuts. The little Electro never sounded so damned good. Power without Tone doesn't work for me. It's all about the sound, and it is awesome.

After a great rehearsal I sat and did a little blues in F -- the classic JOS registrations, kicking left hand bass. Than a run-through of the Stormy Monday changes with a bass line -- open voiced chords with the root down low. Then slid into the head to "Back at the Chicken Shack" with the bass just cranking and the percussion thunking. One of the guys was dripping sweat - he has walking pneumonia, and two of them were late for dinner and in trouble, but none of them would leave as long as I stayed and jammed. I couldn't walk away. I couldn't get enough.

My cell phone finally rang and the spell was broken -- dinner reservations with my wife and a friend. She's an animal. No, not my wife, this little black monster that Steve calls a Road Box MKIII.

The tone is magnificent, the power is unbelievable and the Road Box cuts through a mix (even with two guitar players) like you wouldn't believe. It's a great sound. Damn. I just love it.

The tight punchy bass carrying capability and the full, clean mids quickly dispelled any nervousness that I had about giving up the lower rotor. When the horn ramps up off of Chorale the motion is completely satisfying. I have my ramp speed set a little slow (1.8 seconds) but may try it a little bit faster - I may even try it a little slower -- it is user adjustable.

You Electro guys know like I do that the percussion and mids just turn to mud below C2. Not with the Road Box. Even without the Barker Circuit on the pre-amp this thing did wonders for the Electro (better credit the Speakeasy pre-amp too.)

You gotta hear this thing, and I mean you gotta rehearse or gig with it. I've been working up my jazz chops and do a little jazz when I get a chance. The Road Box MKIII is a Rocker's dream, but it's a killer Leslie for jazz. I hooked the C2 up to it and could not believe the bass tones I was getting with the 838000000 registrations and the clean mids mixed with the swish of the horn.

I also love being able to put out that kind of punch, power and tone out of just one box. I've lost the need to carry two separate boxes (Leslie 2101 + 2121) and a host of tangled patch cords and cables. This thing is not much bigger and only a bit heavier than my Leslie 2121 (Watch for it on ebay) box. I can lift it up into the car by myself and the castors make it roll effortlessly.

When I told the drummer that it was definitely worth lugging a little bit bigger box (than the 2101) he said "Duh -- Let me know if you change your mind and I'll kick your ass and toss you out of the band." Later he went on to say that he would carry it for me if I ever changed my mind. Fat chance, but that's a hell of an endorsement these days.
