Thanks for the reply !!! I've spoken to the young guy that will be
helping me make my way through this maze of technology and am sharing your
post with him. I will be looking at the Motif 8, the Motif ES7 and the
Yamahas. Any particular models on the Yamahas?



Any help at this point understanding the terminology would be greatly
appreciated. The owners manual all assume you know the basics (which I
don't)



How will sampling, sequencing, zones and splits will be working for me?



I think I understand splits (that would be when I want to play a bass guitar
on one end of the keyboard and a synth solo on the other end. right ? And
when you split a keyboard, can you also shift the octaves on each section
that you split? What if I want to play a guitar on one side and a synth on
the other side, but they need to be in the same octave?



What is the master mode?



I'm pretty sure I understand the USB flash ram stick, as I am pretty
computer literate. I'm not sure I completely understand how samples and
patches will be used.

I play in a Pink Floyd tribute band here in Dallas.
I use a Classic Motif 8 for el. piano and ac. piano sounds. On top of that
I use a Motif es7 for everything else including samples etc.
If you're the only keyboard player in the band then you're going to probably
want something that is capable of sampling and sequencing. Also a board
that allows zones and splits that are easily accessible.
I really like the Master mode on the motifs. I programm my patch changes
into the master and simply dial up[ the number or name of the tune and
everything is set and ready to go without punching a bunch of buttons.
Fro REAL Floyd pianos you'll need the Yamaha as the Rolands are very
deficient in the Rhodes/Wurly categories and IMO, terrible in the ac. piano
areas. Also, the Yamahas come preloaded with most of the sounds you'll need
to pull of Floyd sound effects and patches such as strings, realistic
voices, OB horn and synth pads as well as weird synth sounds.
The downside of the Yamahas is that they are NOT user friendly but once you
learn your way around them they are incredibly versatile and useful not to
mention they sound great. You can also buy great organ sounds preprogrammed
for the Motif for very little dough. The Motif es, as probably does the
Roland, is wired for USB or firewire so you can load samples and patches via
flash ram sticks and carry samples and sequences with you. The Rolands
simply don't have any useable organ sounds so if you are looking for a
one-size-fits-all board the Roland won't make you happy. You'll see more
Motifs on tour than you will just about any other board with the exception
of the Tritons. Elton Johns aux keyboardist guy Babylon is a Motif guy as
well as many others.
