I am up in the Land 'o Mackies as well! In fact we all got our start using Tapco's. Great stuff back in the '70"s. This was Greg Mackie's first company and he has a more inexpensive line of mixers which this name. I know people who still have old Tapco's which work great to this day. I think they had an 8 channel expansion to the old 6 channel which made 14 total. Battle ship grey, silver or black. Rane is another great NW company. Also some software company. Micro something?? LOL !

I have been using Mackie mixers for the last decade or so. Living here in Seattle, close to
the land of Mackoids, I have known a few employees of this company. Though I have never heard the
DFX series, my friends at Mackie seem to agree that they are inferior to the non-FX VLZ series.
The VLZ series is also more expensive per channel than the DFX series. This does seem to be
saying something.
The Mackie 1202 VLZ up to the 3204 VLZ all seem to be of similar quality per channel.
Recently I purchased a Mackie 24-8 (the 8 buss mixer) and the sound quality is incredibly higher.
It's not just that the mixer "gets out of the way", it actually imparts an amazing sense of
openess, clarity and detail to the sound. Too bad it's a bit to large and heavy to take around to
gigs...
I have had terrible sonic experiences with the cheaper Behringer mixers. Everyone I know
says similar things. However, the more expensive Behringers are better quality than equivalent
Mackie's. This is not my opinion as I have never heard a 16 channel Behringer. Though it seems
to be a not uncommon opinion. If you're planning on getting a 12 or more channel mixer, it may be
worth your while to compare between the brands.
I'm still a big time Mackie fan, though I also hear rumours of cost cutting and moving the
company overseas kinda stuff. Any hard and fast opinions out there?

I ditched my little Behringer Euro mixer and upgraded to a Mackie DFX 12. What a sweet
unit. I believe the Behringer was robbing tone. My little rack mount RX 1602 that I still own
sounds fine but the one I sold with eq and fx's didn't cut it. Anyone else using this Mackie? I
got a great deal and opted for the 12 channel version. It sits on top of my 4sp rack with my
Receptor and Speakeasy pre very nicely. Just had to tell y'all.
