Subject:Mother of all Leslies- 30A "Vibratone" found
Some of you who are also on Hamtech might have already heard about this, but
this past weekend I went Hammond shopping . I went to look at a Hammond BC
with the intention of swapping some A 100 into some kind of B cabinet. The guy
who had it said it came with a tone cabinet, so I went to look.
What I saw when I got there intrigued me as much or more than the Hammond
did. The person who owned it forgot to advertise or did not know that this
organ also came with a Leslie.
Between late 1940 and 1942 Don Leslie's first commercial offering was not
known as a Leslie but as a "Vibratone" . It bears a slight resemblance to the
later 31H model leslie in that they are both tall boys" , but there are some
other differences.
There are no louvers per se on the 30A that I picked up. The sound comes out
of the top and out of grill cloth covered openings in the bottom. All the
motors and drivers are different in the 30A ( this uses "Stephans" drivers ).
The name "Leslie" appears nowhere on the cabinet.
Since I asked my initial questions on the Hamtech list about this, I have
gotten several e mails asking inquiring about it it but so far I have not
heard from anyone else who actually has one. Mine came with a 31H amp which may
have been offered some where along the line as an upgrade, as the first 30A
amp did not provide motor switching from the console . Upgrades to Jensen
drivers were also offered by Electro Music .
Once again I am seeking information from anyone who knows about these or may
even have one. Harvey Olsen already gave me some good information, and I got
quite a few private e mails asking to send photos etc.
