Sure there is value. Mike has actually done the correct thing, used it to adjust troublesome frequencies; they're not really for shaping the sound (hello? SMILEY FACE on the EQ is a sure sign the user has no clue; the frown is an indicator the user is deaf!), they're for fixing certain frequencies. I would place it before the preamp.
