Subject:Re: Billy Preston dies
Hi All,
Yeah, I noted that statement with interest. I wouldn't be surprised, though: studio time was expensive "back in the day," and producers often had little patience for players who couldn't nail a killer part on the first couple of tries. So, they went to a hired gun to finish it. Keyboard and drum parts seem to be especially prone to this practice. And of course, there was never any credit on the album liner, for reasons that varied from contractual obligations, to pride, to keeping up showbiz images.
A couple of years back, there was an interesting discussion on this list about whether Howard Wales did or didn't play the organ solo on Green-Eyed Lady. (I suspect that he did. If you listen to the other solos and intros that Jerry Corbetta played, there's a different, more rock-like feel to them. G-EL's solo has a jazz-like feel.)
Regards,
-BW
