I saw the Tubes with Vince a couple times. They had a great 2 keyboardist team. I forget the synth player's name but Welnick had big hair and played GREAT piano. I loved the early Tubes especially. "What Do You Want from Life" had great piano/synth parts. It was the "White Punks On Dope" album. RIP Vince.

Uh...yeah....well, not to get all maudlin, and DEFINITELY not to belittle the loss of Vince Welnick, but to be honest, the 'curse of the keyboardist' is kind of overblown, and just something for the media (and fans?) to blather on about. When you get down to it, 2 members had the unfortunate luck of dying before their time, while being in the band; and 2 died after leaving the band. Eventually, all the members of The Dead will be...uh...dead. If Mickey and Bill go first, then we can say it's the curse of the drummers.
As for the the rest of the post by Vince's friend, I can only offer my condolences to the obvious pain he feels. None of us will know what happened, and as in all things, there 3 sides to every story: his, their's, and the truth which lies with both. I knew nothing of Vince's drug problems, but as anyone who has dealt with that situation, if there were such issues, I can guarantee there was more to the story than a deserted victim in a cab. Regardless, if Vince was man enough and friend enough to keep those details confidential in his life, his friend has betrayed that confidence after Vince's passing.
It's a sad day when we lose a talented soul, and a sadder one when that soul is tortured. Godspeed.

Sad to hear about Vince Welnick, a band I was working with opened for The Tubes back in 1981, I guess the curse of the Grateful Dead keyboardist lives on.
