Subject:Re: EVB3 + Leslie
This is just one opinion. I play it through a 145, and a Speakeasy.
I haven't been bored yet. Rather, I still find myself stunned a lot of
the time, and I've had this setup for a couple of years - enough time
for the newness to wear off. Just run the dry signal, with no cabinet
emulation. I created 4 different presets for 4 different organs,
though I mostly use my favorite. The EVB3 through the Leslie is very
musical and non digital in character. I honestly feel as though I
would have to search through several real B3s before I found one I
liked better than my favorite EVB3 preset. The drawbars seem
beautifully balanced. Comping chords on 838000000 are as good as it
gets. It is never harsh or thin, and always full of personality.
There is nothing artificial or fake about the EVB3 through a real
Leslie, nor is there anything sterile about it. The most notable
weakness is that the bass lines seem somewhat boomy, and could use a
bit more punch. Make no mistake, its in the hunt, but it does seems a
bit boomy to my ears. I have the original cross-platform version, but
understand some improvements have since been made to the bass. I
would also say that it is not inherently a bright screamer if that is
what you are looking for.
Through the sim instead of the Leslie, it can sound processed. Take
away the cabinet emulation and run it dry into your Leslie, tweak the
filter age, tonal balance, shape, crosstalk, leakage and other
parameters, and you'll have one nice sounding B3. If I had a real B3
and a technician got it to sound like this (my favorite preset, I'd be
VERY happy him, even if the bass is a bit boomy.
