When Smokin' OP's first came out, my band immediately learned and performed
those arrangements for Carpenter, Love the One You're With, Turn On Your
Love Light, and Bo Diddley. And we played it as close to the OP's album as
possible.

And you know, it's not only the solo. Listen carefully to Skip Knape's
incredible comping underneath the solo. He is obviously playing 808000000
but it too is heavily distorted, rhythmic, and punchy. And the overall sonic
balance of the recording is great. Right up front with no effects. It does
indeed sound like they just went in, set up the mikes, and had fun (that is
what Skip told me as well).

Skip was a HUGE influence on my Hammond playing. So when I climbed down the
steps from our gig four years ago, and Skip was there to tell me how much he
enjoyed my performance, it just blew me away. I am a total hack compared to
him.

Get that CD! You will learn quite a bit about how to play the Hammond organ.

Smokin'OP's was recorded originally on the Platinum Records label
prior to Bob Seger signing with Capitol Records and before Bob formed
the Silver Bullet Band. It was out of print for some time until
Capitol reissued it sometime in the 90s. It should still be available
thru the EMI/Capitol sales/distribution network. And I agree with
David J.....the solo on "Carpenter" is incredible. I worked with Bob
Seger for many years and I asked him about how they recorded OP's and
he said they just went in the studio and pretty much cut it live...not
a lot of overdubs, etc. As David J. mentioned...Skip just burned that
solo live right there in the studio.
