Keyboard greats could gather with Tony Monaco at Orbit Room Sat. June 3!
Tomorrow's early evening (7-9:30 p.m.) special show at Orbit Room by
acclaimed Jazz organ master Tony Monaco may end up kicking off a kind of
mini-festival of great keyboard performance all night long if some of the
rumours and speculation I've been hearing are true.
Monaco, who'll be backed by innovative guitarist Jake Langley and local drum
tyro Vito Rezza, may also end up welcoming a couple of special guests, in
particular Joey De Francesco, who's the producer of his four albums and a
longtime mentor of Monaco's. In addition, it's perhaps not just a
co-incidence that guitarist Langley has been touring with De Francesco in
recent months and that De Francesco, along with other notables such as Dan
Ackroyd and Paul Shaffer of The David Letterman Show fame, are all in town
for events in connection with the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame –and all have
been at Orbit Room before!
Not only that, the last time Monaco played here he ended up sticking around
to jam it up with the members of the regular Saturday night Orbit band, The
A Team, which takes the stage at 10 p.m. following Monaco's show. (This
superb Funk/Dance band, comprised of members of the famed Sattalites
Reggae/Funk group and other super players, really lives up to its name!)
"You can pretty much figure Tony is going to want to stick around and sit in
with that band," said a source who knows all of the performers well. "And I
can't imagine Joey and whoever he's hanging out with not coming by at some
point too," the source added. And if De Francesco and Shaffer do show up,
it's hardly likely they'd be able to resist the temptation to get their
hands on the club's in-house Hammond B3.
Those who attend the Monaco show (doors open at 6 p.m. and the club's famed
kitchen will be open with a light menu) could end up getting a lot more than
they expected for their $20 cover!
The club is located at 580 College St., just east of Clinton. For more info
