Ryan,
Thanks for getting back with more news regarding your 44W and your
modified Speakeasy preamp...I found it most interesting.
A few more questions...Does your preamp have tone controls, and if
so, do they help you to get more of the bass tone that you desire?
Does the preamp roll-off the harsher upper-end of your clone? How's
the output volume? Do you mic your Leslie? (If so, you may be able
to place more emphasis on the bass end than the Leslie seems to
produce in the room.)
In addition to my 44W, I have a 122 and a 46W. The later 2 have
similar boxes, but different amps and woofers. While their tone is
similar, there are subtle differences that make both of them
appealing in their own way...just depends on your application. I
have a '57 C3 running into the 122 for a creamy, warm jazzy sound.
I run a '62 RT3 chopper into the 46W for a harsher, brighter rock
sound.
My 122 is definitely quieter (my 46W also produces the 60-cycle hum
you're referring to, and the speed switching produces a
slight "click"). I've been told that it is based on the fact that
the 122 is balanced, eliminating any/most interference inducted into
the signal path between the organ preamp and the Leslie amplifier.
So I wasn't shocked (or even bothered, really) by the fact that my
newly acquired 44W has the same hum.
Thanks again for your posts...keep 'em coming!
