I have a switch on my controller that toggles between bypassed and not bypassed, so I can A-B very easily, and all this does to my ears is seem to stop the rotors in a predetermined position. The rotary effect goes both brighter and more mellow than the bypassed setting so it is some kind of mid position with horn/rotor facing obliquely (??), but still with the pre-amp/cabinet model in place.
With the rotary bypass enabled, the sound coming out of the output to my ears is not similar to the tone coming out of a B3 preamp. It lacks the brightness and and the very large amount of bright keyclick. However, with the rotary effect in the loop the sound is quite similar to a B3 through a Leslie. So it doesn't seem like it is a "preamp only" mode, rather a Leslie speaker where the horn and the rotor have been fixed in a certain position.
