Subject:Re: USB Connectivity (Was: The Casio Stigma, etc...)
Here are my thoughts on the subject:
Assuming that the new Casios cannot be used as master keyboards, there are two ways of looking at the situation:
1.. Cynical/ironic: A quarter-century after we were finally given the means to allow us to control musical instruments remotely it has been rudely and inexplicably snatched from us by one of the great manufacturers who helped make MIDI a significant shaper of contemporary music. Do they really think we don't want to use their instruments as master controllers any more?
2.. Pragmatic: When MIDI was introduced 25 years ago, every keyboard on the market had a specific, identifiable character. MIDI was essential if you wanted to blend sounds or use two or more keyboards live without being an octopus. Today's keyboards (e.g. the Casio WK range) can in theory produce most of the sounds associated with the synths of yore. Perhaps that aspect of MIDI is no longer so important when you can have a DX-7 "Rhodes" and Mellotron strings on the left side of a split and Hammond organ layered with Oberheim brass on the right, all from the same $300 keyboard.
Take your pick.

That's right, normally... I've used an Emagic 6x2 and
M-Audio Uno with both my home and live rigs for some
time now. But this application has me stumped.
According to the rep I spoke to at Casio, as well as
one local technician, the USB B port on the WK-8000 is
only usable as a connection that allows the WK to act
like a plug-in within a software recording
environment. Unless we've overlooked something, I
suspect the issue is settled...
Bruce, if you've got a way around this one, I'm all
ears though...It would still be great to have the
option of the WK-8000 having MIDI output capabilities.
