Subject:Re: Piano sound????
Hi,
I had to respond here. I have been playing sampled pianos in bands for years and here is what I have discovered. Belive it or not, the new mega millibyte pianos sound like a dream in the studio, but on stage at 110 db they sound like crap. They tend to be too pretty and do not cut through. I find that older, less accurate, smaller samples work better. Let's face it, when you are pumping loud with a band all that nuance is lost anyway. A down and dirty piano works better. I use the Yamaha P50m or the old piano in the Ensoniq SQ's. They really sit nice in a band.

Ah that great "won't cut through the mix" factiod. I took that as
gospel until I tried it.. first with a Kurzweil grand sample from a
1000PX rack unit. And more recently with a Yamaha P80 and P90 in a
rowdy rock cover band.. nothing about the grands keeps them from being
heard, at least through full-frequency speakers.
Yamaha P90.. killer action, great pianos, light weight, 88 keys. Crap
MIDI implementation, though, as a controller you'd better do your
homework.
