I'm starting to change my opinion of the XK-1's "additional sounds".
When I first bought the organ, I wanted to audition those sounds nearly
right-off-the-bat. I wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be but
because of the keyboard's size, weight & B3/Leslie sound, I didn't lose
sleep over it. As many of you know, I decided to opt for the Roland
JV-1010 / XV-2020 / JV-1010(again) to get my other sounds using the XK-1
as a controller. Well, at a rehearsal a few nights ago I hooked up the
XK-1 & JV-1010 and..... I'll be d*mned.. I couldn't get the module to
respond! I fooled around with it's settings for a bit but finally gave
up and unplugged the module and proceeded to use the organ on it's own.
Well, we got to doing "Superstition" and I really needed to have a
clavinet so just for kicks (and because I actually never tried this
before), I punched up the Bright Clavinet patch and played it. Wow... I
couldn't get over how well it sounded "in the mix" with the rest of the
band. Later we were going to do "The Thrill Is Gone" and I decided to
try the 70's E. Piano sound and ba-da-bing! I worked super within the
context of the band's sound. Now I'm wondering... Could H/S have had
this in mind when they created these patches? What sounds I didn't
think worked out that well on their own really seemed to cut thru and do
the trick when played in a band setting. I have a gig this afternoon
and I'm going forgo bothering with that module and opt for the extra
sounds on the Hammond instead. Man, what a pleasant surprise!
