Actually, I'd like to talk about that a little bit. There is an entire
generation of players coming up and joining the clonewheel ranks, who have
never seen much less sat down behind a real tonewheel Hammond.
As proof, there are lots of amazed comments posted whenever a video of a
halfway competent Hammond player is posted. Wow! He's playing on two
keyboards! He's actually kicking bass with his left hand while he plays
other stuff with his right! And he's pushing drawbars and changing knobs and
switches too! Far out! And what was that swoosh thing he just did with his
hand???!!!!!!
It's a little sad that people are so amazed. In reality, those guys are just
demonstrating basic organ technique. EVERYBODY who has played a real Hammond
with any skill at all has learned to do these things. That is where the bar
is set - to consider yourself an organ player, ya gotta know this stuff.
If you are a veteran player, you can translate those techniques to a clone.
Unfortunately IMO, if all you have ever played is a clone, that's a real
barrier to learning to play in the authentic manner. I wonder how organ
playing will survive into the next 40 years as the players raised on real
Hammonds fade away.
There ought to be some "Organ Player 101" course people could take to learn
the performance language of the Hammond. For now, I guess there is this list
and instructional videos from the masters.
