Both statements are technically correct. CBS bought Electro Music (Don
Leslie's company) in 1965 as well as Fender, Steinway, Rodgers, etc. about the
same time. They even bought CalCraft, the California company that made Leslie
cabinets and later, Fender boxes. Since they already owned CBS Labs, it wasn't
much of a stretch to use the same engineering and research talent for all CBS
divisions.

Leslie models 60 and 70 were developed by CBS Labs. These two-cabinet
systems had Don Leslie's "Space Generator" (an electromechanical phase shift
device) but no rotors. Fender "Vibratone" Leslies for guitars were CBS Labs
projects, as were Leslie audiophile speakers for hi-fi systems. Other than working
as "consultants," Don Leslie and Leo Fender didn't have much to do with these
later products.
