And, I can't believe any Hammond or Clone player uses the same drawbar
settings for the same song all the time. I know I don't. I never used the
presets on the B3 (except B flat and B) and I don't on clones. I kinda
shove the drawbars in the general area, but I always tweak them because of
the room, or the tone the guitar player happens to be using, or my mood, or
the mood of the crowd, or where the Leslie happens to be sitting, or where I
happen to be sitting, etc., etc...

Hi All,
Bringing it back around to the beginning again ...
The "GSL sound" was probably due to a lot of things:
- The organ used (quite possibly a spinet, with its lack of foldback), and
the fact that no two Hammonds sound quite the same;
- How high the Leslie was set (probably all the way, since 40W Leslies
aren't that loud to start with);
- The registration(s) used;
- Whether bass pedals were being kicked (even with a bass player in the
band!);
- The mic'ing technique used (certainly NOT close-mic'ed!);
- The mixing board it went into, and any outboard processing.
As far as the registration goes, I remember that in a Keyboard interview a
few years back, Steve Winwood mentioned that his favorite setting was all
white bars out and the black ones half-out. I nievely took that to mean 84
8848 448, but he probably meant 00 8848 448, so that's a good start, and the
final output will probably vary on different clones through different amps.
In today's clone world, though, what Mr. Winwood did 40 years ago is only a
starting point. Keyboard amplification technology has improved, bringing
deeper, tighter bass and more defined highs; both of these will affect the
sound. You'll need to fill the blanks in with your ears.
Regards,
-BW
