Subject:Re: Controllers???

Norm,
Here is my most basic setup for live use with Receptor. Your needs sound similar to
mine.
I use a digital piano (Yamaha P250) and a Voce V5 to control Receptor.
My presets on the Yamaha do nothing other than change midi channel, and in a few
cases reassign the mod wheel or pedal, but I could get away without that.
I have my Receptor set up so that midi channel 1 is Rhodes, 2 is B4, 3 is Wurly, 4 is
Minimogue, 5 is blank (more on that later), 6 has (sometimes) piano, 7 combo organ, and
8 mellotron stuff. This is all 1 Receptor patch. I switch between sounds by changing
presets on the Yammie, but the receptor just stays on that one patch.
The V5 drawbars transmit only to the B4, and I have a Midi Solutions event
processor that maps the drawbars to where Receptor 's B4 needs to see them, and also the
drive/percussion etc. controls to the appropriate CC#'s for B4.
I made a midi solutions setting as well that changes the mapping of the mod wheel
using the bottom 4 notes of the piano to change settings. So, for example, my Rhodes
goes through Scarbee's VKFX, and I can toggle the mod wheel to control vibrato depth,
speed, or phaser depth, or overdrive by hitting the appropriate key.
This is for small clubs and one offs.
My next step up is to add my XK-3 on top of the Yamaha. (as in RIGHT on top-
sitting on it) Now the information from midi channel 5 is passed to the XK-3, and I have
dual manual organ happening.

There's more to it, depending on the gig, but the basic premise is that I don't
really change Receptor patches, and that I could use almost any keyboard to do what I do
with it midi-wise...it would be an easy matter to set up splits and the like as well.
Works for me, but I can see if one wanted to change patches more frequently, or
to use multiple modules, or modules without the multitimbral capabilities of Receptor,
that a more advanced controller would become neccessary. Also, the Midi Solutions box
could be looked at as part of my controller, which means that my controller is actually
fairly capable.
