True True True... Like all the great Hammond solos its not about how
"difficult" it is to play, as most competent Hammond players can easily play
it... Its about the amazing creativity that musicians like Skip have that
can create such a great solo.
If you take that particular solo apart, Skip uses many of the typical runs
that many Hammond players us, like the trilled 4ths, Hammer Trills, and the
minor runs, but he placed them in the PERFECT spots. When I teach young
Hammond players I recommend a few players for them to listen to... Booker
T., Jon Lord, and Skip... Go to school, ladies and gents, and buy Smokin'
OP's....

David J said: I asked Skip specifically about his solo on If I Were a
Carpenter (as it is one of the great Hammond solos of all time, IMHO).
Of course, he said it just came to him at the time. Amazing! What a
musician!

I totally agree with you that it is one of the all-time B-3 solos. An
incredible wall of sound. It just shows how powerful the Hammond can
be when being flown by a guy who knows how to cook. Another great
Hammond recording that really shows off the B3/Leslie combination is
Summertime by the Chris Columbo Quintet. It is like a demonstration
disc for Hammond/Leslie. I am still amazed at how good that recording
sounds almost 40 years later.
