Subject:diy waterfall midi controller?

I'm toying with the idea of building a waterfall keyboard controller
from scratch, am wondering if anyone has actually done it? Is it
possible to buy a keybed from Korg/Yamaha/Roland or even Electro or if
you're lucky to an actual hammond keybed? route the cable end to your
midi interface board etc...? It seems that any waterfall controllers,
be it very few, are overpriced.... the XK3 "lower manual" add-on is
merely a midi controller in a case for $2000? whaaaat???
