As with other things the word vintage conjurs up better or gourmet quality or something.

I have a vintage 22 R Leslie and a 122A. I find very little difference in tonal quality neithe being particularly superior to the other.

Joey De Francesco often performs with a new 122XB tube amp current production paired with a 771 Lelslie SS amp. Thus he has the benefit of some tube distortion plus the higher power of the SS 771. Either of these will sound brighter than a 122 with aging amp and speaker components. The rotating slements then and now are designed to provide the same avaiable 2 or 3 speeds. The newer series use one motor to do this. The older ones had 2 and could get out of wack. Anything can break down.

Jim Brown at JB Music Stoughton WI has a "new B3" hooked to a 122XBN and a Leslie 122. His opinion and mine was that the new model sounded fine and had some characteristics perhaps even preferrable.
The current production uses a different bass speaker than the earlier (without the N), which a fellow on amother Hammond list claims is a big plus.
