Subject:RE: Gig monitors
Lou,
I currently play with a church music group at a large church. Your topic is a huge topic of discussion right now with our group. The problem with floor monitors is, IMO, they are really designed for vocals. Using them with vocals and acoustic instruments or a very small group might work, but when your putting in bass, guitars, keys, horns, and drums they just don't seem to work as well. Cramming too many other elements in additional to vocals can create just more unmanageable sound. Running direct from the instruments is a problem as well. The sound-guy, unless he's really a pro, just ends up getting a zillion requests from everyone wanting to hear more of themselves in the monitor. Personally, I hate running direct and obviously can't do it with a Leslie. Most of the instrumentalist I play with bring there own amp which often contributes to the problem. Plus, there are a lot of other factors to consider, like, room size. Mainly, in my situation it's the vocalist
complaining that they can't "hear themselves."
So what's the solution?? It can be a vertible can of worms. I've been lobbying for some time to get us to use the Shure in-ear monitor system for the vocalists. I think this will cut down on stage volume and make things easier on the whole team. Another approach which might work well is using side-fills ( like Mackie SRM-450's). We've tried using hot-spots but I think they're way took weak for our situation.
My 2 cents.
Dan.

Floor monitors offer better full range sound.

I heard a Bose tower last night and that might be something to consider as they disperse the sound real well for stage and audience especially in a not-too-loud situation.

Subject: [CWSG] Gig monitors
I am looking for opinions on monitors used during live performances. I play for a church music team. Things are not cranked up real loud, but I like accurate monitoring. I currently use an earphone set (Shure E2) and it seems to work well, but I notice through some of your photos that some others use floor monitors. I have never asked for an opinion on this before so I thought I would see what others think. So far, I think I like the in-ear monitor better than the floor monitors we used to have. But, is there a distinct advantage to having a floor monitor?
Lou
