Subject:Re: IC's and keyboards

Another bigtime IC killer is static electricity. If you are touching your circuit cards inside you keyboards for any reasons make sure you do not have a build up of static charge on your body. You can buy cheap grounding straps that mount to your wrist, or if you just remember to touch and hold onto a ground source with one hand (like most water pipes in your house, or your dog or wife!) to discharge yourself before you start working on your keyboard guts you will be OK. One big word of caution. If you are going to clean the dusty build up on your circuit cards (and you should because dust can conduct electricity and cause shorts) by using a vacuum be sure to connect a ground to the vacuum hose so it does not build up a static charge and zap you IC chips. I have seen this happen many many times to PC towers that were sitting on the carpeted floor under someone's desk. The cleaning crew would be vacumming the floor and without knowing it "zap" the pc as they ran the vacuum cleaner
into the PC. In my tech days we used a special vacumn that had a grounding wire attached to the hose and before you turned the unit on you would ground the hose first!
If ICs do not receive excessive heat or electric zaps they can and should last for a really long time. I have IC from the mid 70s that still work fine.

The most dangerous thing for such an IC is heat. Try opening your case
and play for a long time. Perhaps some of the chips get hot. You could
try to mount passive coolers (heatsink), which should fit in. They
spread the heat on more surface and therefore will keep kooler than the
chip itself. In an extreme case, you could think of a fan to get cool
air in your case, but I guess this will never be required. Just think of
your PC. What you do in there, you can do in your Keyboard. Some
cleaning from time to time is necesarry, to prevent the dust from
producing shortcircuits on the quite difiicile boards.
Hope I could help!
Ah before I forget! Donīt play so hard that your keys brake! Could help
as well :-)
greetings
Michael
