I agree. Once you get into the Nord Stage's "ethereal" price range, there are a lot of options: Motif, Fantom X -- and rack versions -- S90ES, Roland RD, Korg Triton, and the Receptor. You can also consider older ROMpler solutions like the Roland XV and Alesis QS series, depending on your need for sampling. Both of these are readily available as used gear.
For that kind of money, the Nord Stage had better rock my world!
