Hi Peers,

Anybody knowing the intricacies and
"drivers-restrictions" of GNU - Linux boxes, can get
for sure inmediate financial relief , but caveats
applies to beginners , newbies and/or those coming
from recently 'conversions' :)

The main one with Linux : one size does not fit all !

It means that as known , will take a deep learning
curve getting up and running.

On a tight agenda, Linux is the longest way.

Not bad if you already got a Linux box from a local
Mart with it pre-installed (just to mention where to
go in a rush without taking a 2nd mortgage)

Formatting a disk Windoze destructive partitioning
will turn the novice highly frustated and probably
will not longer a convert, unless until the next Linux
distributions, come closer to Windoze artillery (aka
everything automated, GUI oriented + "OEM certified
compatible drivers" )

Just try MSN on Linux and you'll see the complexities
between both worlds.

Word of friendly warning from a veteran in the command
line (character screens)

I've told my sons that I came from times where kids
weren't scared about seeing only letters on screen! :)

CLONE PREFERENCES

My first impression if already having a MIDI
compatible keyboard then a Roland VK-8M box should be
in my wish-list as any of the following wouldn't be
longer needed : monitor, plugin 'receptor' , USB
adaptor (if a notebook), etc.etc. , conversely a long
list with whatever you should be add to get a decent
sound.

Just I'd wonder if VK firmware is enough flexible to
receive updates also from manufacturer rather than a
3rd part.

ERGONOMICS

Thanks by recalling about this factor often not
mentioned at all.

SCREENS

In my case an LCD monitor for home recording isn't a
must .

Just a newer CRT was enough for a tight budget.

Same size, but state-of-the art , higher refresh rates
and 'bon apettite'.

LCD counteparts even with 12 milliseconds refresh rate
doesn't seem enough quality if watching DVD ( with
some blinking at closer views).

I wonder if LCD monitors should be a portable option
as hand lugagge on a plane in terms of ergonomics (if
that needed on stage)

CASES

I didn't think at all in a rackable 19" mounting case
otherwise the gigging stuff would seem an ISP facility
rather than a sound workstation :)

My preference is for the 'hard to find' desktop cases,
IMHO better for a keyboardist ergonomics than huge ATX
tower cases filled just with 'empty space'.

Let's say my dream team: a flat case **, an LCD
monitor, that's it .

DISK ADAPTORS:
** For using 2.5" disk on a desktop case I got at
eBAY.com a Hong Kong made adaptor at $0.95 plus S/H.

Tha mod is needed as IDE 3.5 " disks carry different
cable than notebook std. 2.5" disks.
