Subject:Clone Amps...my take FWIW


This is worth exactly what y'all paid for it...

Having said that, here's my take.

I have been looking for the "right" keyboard amp
for over two years now.

I play Nord Electro2 73, Yamaha Motif 7, Alesis QS7.1,
Roland A37 MIDI controller into XV-5050 W/vintage keys,
and an Emu B3.

I had the Roland KC-500. It sounded great on piano and
synth, but blew chunks on Hammond (clone)...too "colored".

I have a Motion Sound KP-200S. This amp craps its pants
at stage volume. I'm not talking about competing with Marshall
stacks. All I wanted it for was a personal stereo stage
monitor because my keys always go through the PA. Not
gonna happen...hit a piano note and KRAAAACCKKKKKK!!!!
This is a "known" problem with this amp. The compressor
mod sligthly helps, but for the price of this thing,
it oughta be fine and it ain't.

I run my Electro2 73 through a Speakeasy and Motion
Sound Pro-3T/LowPro and it sounds great, so I am
not a Motion-Sound basher.

I have tried the Peavey amp with the 2X10" speakers and
it sounds muddy and tends to distort, but not as badly as
the KP-200S.

I tried the Alesis Sumo 100 and it is a little bright
on synth and piano, but not too bad on hammondclone.

Believe it or not, the Behringer KX-12000 ain't half
bad for organ and synth. A little colored for piano,
though. But you can get 'em from Musician's Friend
for $199.

So my search continues. All I want is a stereo amp
that faithfully reproduces what goes into it, at
a volume that I can use for a personal monitor
on stage right behind me when I play.

I don't want to go to the EON/Mackie/PA powered
speakers on stands, but that may be my only option.

BTW...I am going broke buying amps that don't cut it.
Mebbe I just stick with my original....two Behringers
on small stands behind me, but I DID say I wanted
ONE amp.....(8->
