If you have a CX-3 or Electro then its good to boost the signal before it gets to the
preamp. That's what the barker is for. You can get the same effect if you run the signal
into a small mixer or another tube preamp like a Blue Tube or ART MP and boost the
signal before it gets to the Speakeasy. The benefit of the barker is that its a clean signal
boost and its right there in the Speakeasy unit. No extra cables.

I have a stereo rack unit. One side has a barker with the classic clone style preamp. I run
the organ sound straight into that side. The other side has the keyboard style preamp and
I feed that side to the Aux 2 send on my mixer. Then I can add the effect to each other
keyboard sound as I want. I don't add much to the piano sound but add more to synth
sounds.

From what I understand the Howler is more designed for the Jon Lord sound. Someone
else can commen on that since I've never heard one.

BTW, the V2 version of the CX-3 has a mellow drawbar mode that takes a lot of the
shrillness off the top end and it had some other good features also. There were actually
only a couple of people on the list who wished they hadn't upgraded to V2. I was happy
with the upgrade and just switched from using Chorus C3 to C1. If you have a B3 that you
are comparing the sound to then the C/V change might bug you but if you don't you can
probably live with the change.
