After using SM57's and a few others I came upon using Marshall's MXL 603
condenser mics for the top end left and right. These are really cheap condenser
mics made for instruments like drums, wind, and came as freebies with the MXL
2001's I purchased some years ago. I tried the larger diaphragm 2001 but found
the 603 to make it easy to capture the high end of the treble rotor without
breaking up claiming 137db spl spec. I use these in my studio where my 222 Leslie
is in a custom built soundproofed cabinet to isolate it from the studio.

They should work for live and claim being rugged for road use but being
condensers your board will need phantom power 48v. I do use some good mic pres with
these so this may make the difference. However the same pres with the
venerable SM57 didn't seem to get as good a sound for me.
