Subject:Re: Leslie mics
I use a pair of mid-70s SM57s, one on top, one on bottom. Sometimes the soundguys at our gigs like to get more esoteric: Sennheiser MD421s have been used, but since most of the nightclubs we work in are "manned" by meatheads, I won't spend $700 on a pair of mics that will end up being mixed to sound like crap anyway. The mid-70s 57s sound really good, are indestructible and can be found for about $50 apiece. For leslie applications, they sound better than the Betas. If a sound man knows what he's doing and cares, he'll have a mic selection and ideas for micing you; my 57s are for the guys who don't. I've had guys go stereo on top and mono on bottom for live, but it's rare you'll have a guy who has that many channels open and is willing to go the distance. This particular guy had been mixing my band at his club for a couple years, but it wasn't until I brought my Pink Freud (Pink Floyd tribute) project in that he put up extra mics. Guess he likes that stuff!

I was wondering if you guys could share what your favorite mics are for
Leslies. Brands/models etc. and also are you using one or two up top,
as well as the bottom, and how are you placing them for best results.
Thanks,
Bob
