Subject:Re: First post: 2101 question(s)
Even though the 2101 has a higher power rating on the driver than a
regular Leslie 122/147 it still is slightly deficient in volume.
I mic the top and run a line out of the mixer to the FOH for the low
end. As far as reporducing the true Leslie sound it works pretty
good. It's essential a way to get a real leslie effect without
carting the weight around. OTOH, you have to carry two pieces of
gear instead of one. The 2101 and some type of cabinet/amp to
reporduce the lower rotor effect on stage. I hear that some folks
don't use a cabinet for lower rotor onstage and instead just run the
rotor line out on the 2101 to the FOH system. Either way it works
ok. For sheer volume you're going to need two 2101's OR mic it and
run it back through your onstage keys monitor along with the lower
rotor sym. I've done both.
In the end it might be just as easy to carry a real the real thing
rather than two or three pieces.I have the luxury of having a van so
I can carry the extra pieces. In the end, it takes longer to set up
than a 122/147.
If you're going for the small rig, fet the 2101, a good clone and
forego the bottom rotor monitor onstage. It will sound fine.
I find it hard to dial the XK3 sym in for a close Leslie effect.
Probably because I only use on monitor for piano and Leslie therefore
you don't get an effective stereo representation.
I'm considering another SR450 so I can get the stereo effect.
I've tried the Roland 550 and it doesn't real cut it for me. It gets
muchy when you throw the volume to it. It's loud but at high SPLs
it's dirty. It also does not do not give me correct representation
fo my Motif es pianos. That's another subject for another day.
The sales guys all say the new Motifs have the best piano sounds.
Also subjective. I don't think they are nearly as good as the
classic Motifs.
