I can follow what Walter is saying in regard to anything you add to the signal path can affect the signal, and if the effect is not what you need it doesn't need to be added.
I do kow that having a Speakeasy Stereo preamp take everything from my Mackie 1402 before it goes to the speakers has made a difference in the sound of organ, electric piano, Promega 3 piano, trumpet, guitars,et al. I concur that the EQ Knobs are so non drastic in what they do that it is possible for them to sell a model with no EQ and I can understand why it could be effective at less bucks outlay.
The only reason I have it in the chain is that everything sounds more satisfying from the keys I press with it in the chain. Not too hard to believe that it adds tube warmth to digital information from digital instruments into solid state amps.
Or maybe we are fooling ourselves- just like part of what you miss with an XK-3 is that you don't have that 450# beast to be seated at!
