>To do the job right you will need a new crossover in addition to the new woofer. I wanted to keep the crossover at the same crossover point as the stock one which is 800hz with a 12dB per octave slope. My custom crossover will handle up to 600 watts and supports a 16ohm load for the HF driver and a 8 ohm load for the LF driver. You can purchase this very heavy duty unit from Mark at Meniscus Audio in Grand Rapids, MI. Mark can be reached at 616-534-9121. Here is the link to their web site: http://www.meniscusaudio.com/default.cfm
If you talk to him let him know that you want a crossover just like the one he recently made for me. If you want a different crossover point, or a different slope or any kind of custom work he can make it up for you. He's a great guy and very helpful. He has been in the custom audio business for many years and knows his stuff. The crossover will cost you around $45.
>As for the woofer, there are many good choices and it really is a matter of personal taste.
>For new units another popular one is an Eminence Kappa 15A.
I Checked out Eminence, expecting possibly to get a Delta 15 LF but the impedence was 8 rather than 16 so I bought a Delta 15 which is 16 OHM and slightly different spec, and by their admission less potent bass. I intended to replace the bass speaker in my 122A, but after some trial have it in my 22 where I like what it does better than in the 122A. I think I have slightly less bass volume but nicer otherwise. The Delta 15 LF is being used by Motion Sound in the 1771, which is noted for bass- however it is also biamped so the speaker would be part of the story. I read of someone else bragging up the LF also.
>I'm not sure what model of woofer is in my Speakeasy Road Leslie but it screams.
I didn't expect to be wanting the Hammond to scream, always admired the dulcet tones it is capable of but- that controlled scream and distortion that you get is so big a part of the satisfying Hammond sound and the tubes are part of why it's good.
Also as far as bass is concerned I am not seeking loud bass but rather just having the right speakers for a satisfying sound for the player. Hard to quantify, but here sometimes a speaker or a circuit will do it. Of course Steve says to buy one of their new EQ s and he might be right!
>I could take the back off and look at the model if you are interested. I pretty sure it's an Eminence of some kind. It's not super bottom end though and that sounds like what you are looking for. Eminence also makes a 15LF that I believe is for extended low end.
>Hope this info helps and good luck.
Definitely helps. I might get the crossover and a Delta 15LF. I wonder what Hammond changed to? Of course it is always possible for a company to buy from Eminence a speaker to their own spec.
As to the Speakeasy Road Leslie, there is also the possiility that Steve could change some amp components for more power- apparently he is providing you with some such. He's capable of doing some good things for sound!
