Considering the age of the machine, it's very likely that it does indeed need
a new battery. However, it is also extremely unlikely that the problems
you're describing have anything whatsoever to do with the battery.

Your problems are more likely due to bad or intermittent interconnects inside
the unit. If you open it up and change the battery, and it starts working
again, that probably means that the offending interconnect(s) got moved and
started making contact again. Try reseating all of the connectors inside BEFORE
you change the battery.
