I'd really appreciate any feedback from anyone who's played around
with this type of setup.
That great growl that you get from a Hammond is the combination of
the Hammond and the Leslie together. I just played my XK3 for
several hours through my 122 with an 1122 kit I recently bought. I
had the XK3 on half volume and the 122 on half volume, when I had
the Hammond EXP-100F pedal to the metal it was screaming. It growls
like a tiger, that beautiful natural distortion of the Leslie's all
tube amp. I experimented with using the tube drive on the XK3 and
running clean, if I used the XK3's tube drive it added some warmth
if used at low levels but thined out if used alot. The XK3 would
scream without using the tube circuit when I had the volume on half
on both the XK3 and the 122 with the expression pedal wide open.
I believe that it's trickey to reproduce the sound of an all tube
amp. The ouptput tubes are a huge part of that sound. The tube
circuit on the XK3 can kind of act like increasing the output of the
Hammond's AO-28 or AO-10 Preamp. They used to step up the voltage
output on Hammonds to overdrive the Leslies at lower volumes to get
that real sweet growl like Jimmy Smith and Jack McDuff would get.
I'm going to try my POD that I use for recording guitar and see what
it would sound like. I'm curious because it has amp simulations
besides effects.
I just posted a question about Leslie simulation earlier and had a
reply from Thomas that explained that the Hughes & Kettner Tube
Rotosphere MKII had great overdrive and excellent Leslie simulation.
It could kill 2 birds with one stone if you don't care for the XL3's
Leslie simulation.
