Subject:Re: Doepfer D3M Waterfall Controller?
Hello Andre
I'm struggling with "I already have half a CX-3". Does that mean that
you have a CX-3 that you can use as a controller for the B4. If so,
I can work just great. You can re-assign the control transmit cc#s
for midi mapping. OR, you can get MIDI-OX and really go to town with
your mapping. The Program buttons on the CX-3 can call up different
midi maps for whatever you need, be it different software instruments
like Lounge Lizard (hint: drawbars can become slider controls), or to
access additional parameters on the B4, or for splitting the keyboard
to control different instruments at the same time. You can map the
drawbar preset buttons on the CX-3 to trigger different reverse color
drawbar presets on the B4. I actually did this with the EVB3 and it
was a fabulous controller.
That stated, I just sold my CX-3 to basically focus on piano
development for the better part of this year. I'd like to think that
hammer action would be OK for organ once I get used to it, and a mere
B4d drawbar controller will suffice. I'm sure reality will hit me
square in the eyes and when I get back into organ, I'll be looking for
a controller. Another CX-3 is sure a viable option. But I'll also be
following any posts about the D3M. The theory is that it will have a
very robust keybed with good Hammond feel. It will be adaptable for a
proper dual manual stack as well. The Doepfer drawbar controller also
looks interesting. With it, the price would likely approach or exceed
a used CX3 that at the very least is a sweet backup. The Doepfer
action and feel may be much better, however. Please let me/us know if
you get your hands on the Doepfer and what you think. Remember, once
you have a quality controller, tone can always be upgraded and
supplemented with new software. I'm so lucky that I got the EVB3 two
years ago before Logic went MAC-only, and later EVB3 was further
restricted to be only available in Logic Pro. But the B4 is still
arguably nicer then a lot of the hardware clones, and they may someday
come out with the B5. There will be other great software clones in
the future. Maybe Hammond will come out with a module, as they did
before, and also come out with a software clone as well. Those who
don't like the XK3 keyboard could then use the Doepfer action with the
VASE? software.
