You hit the issues most succinctly. There is a real benefit to the presence
of the bass and mid-range with a 122. If you are going to be playing at one
location, go for the 122 because you won't begrudge the additional seven
vertical inches at all. If you will be gigging a lot and already have the
van to cart a C-3, you might not notice the seven inches either. A 122 is
actually easier to carry up a stairs, because the height gives a more
natural angle for two people. The difference in weight is not significant.
If you do gig with a 142, plan on a bass DI or a mic to supplement the 142's
lower output. Its necessary even in smaller clubs. At the other extreme,
if you are going to mic the entire Leslie to FOH all the time, you won't
notice much difference between a 142 and 122. Bass response is best when
the unit is sitting on a hard floor and a couple feet away from any walls.
On the other hand, I often raised my 145 up a couple feet so that the rotor
wouldn't be blocked by the organ/drums/ bodies.
