I got this totally "Rube Goldberg" setup put together in my living
room that I love the sound of - inexpensive mixed with only a bit
more costly good stuff. Picture this if you like: A $449 Casio 88
PX300 on a $39 Musicians Friend platform stand. A $399 Kurzweil ME1
module gaff-taped and velcroed to a Roland VK8M on top of it - a
perfect fit. Both taped and velcroed to the left top end of the
Casio. About an inch away, an Edirol PCR-80, 61-note MIDI controller,
is gaff-taped on top of the Casio with Motion Sound cut green foam
blocks underneath. This takes up most of the rest of the Casio's
right side top.

The Kurz pianos are played by the Casio. The VK8M is played with the
Edirol controller (RolandED makes the best keyboard/midi stuff in the
world). The Edirol controller's Sustain/Hold 1 pedal (an old Roland
sustain pedal) latches CC80, swapped via its MIDI programming from
CC64 Sustain, to Rotary speed On/Off for the VK8M. The Edirol's 1st
slider assigned to CC81 puts the VK8M rotary into Brake mode. The
Kurzweil L/R sounds go into the VK8M's auxiliary Expression L/R
inputs, so both piano and organ volume/expression are controlled by
one FC7 pedal, with the two modules' volumes adjusted to each other.
Sweet, whew! Now I just gotta find a way to put it together solid and
fast at a gig - I love the way this sounds. The Kurzweil ME1 is the
best thing that's come my way in quite a while; beautiful pianos,
really good Wurlys and Rhodes, extremely believeable basses - none of
which I planned to use when I got the ME1 looking for a great
acoustic piano to MIDI in place of the Electro's, but now... The nice
thing about the ME1 is they put the good stuff close to each other,
so you don't play one good bass then the psycho-from-hell bass, then
a whiney synth bass - same with the pianos. The good selections are
close together: Out of 30 or so acoustic pianos I think most can find
one they really like.

Hey! It's my birthday today: "Will you still need me, will you still
feed me when I'm.." Yeesh ~ almost. Rock 'n Roll Weekend coming up!
Have fun. Walter j
