I don't recall anyone at GC pointing a gun to anyone's head saying "You HAVE to sell your used gear to us."

I'd also wager that no one forced the original owner to take $550.

Furthermore, I'll bet that the church was also not forced to pay $1100.

So, the problem again is......?
