Hey Norm, even though I haven't done big tours like that, I have used the in-ears quite a bit. And they're not nearly as expensive as you think (per person). The cheap way: get a small mixer with XLR inputs: have the engineer send you your monitor mix right to that mixer; If your mixer has aux sends, you've got the monitor in channel 1, your keys in the other channels, and obviously, just make sure you're not sending Channel 1 back to the house (or horrendous feedback, swearing, and hearing loss will ensue!). You can use the aux sends to send to the house.
The problem is this: you MUST have your own mix: if you're sharing with someone else, you'll suffer with what they need in their monitor. While with speakers this isn't so bad, with in ears you are closing off all ambient noise/sound, and now all you hear is that monitor send. Not good. Also, it takes some getting used to, but it can work. If everyone in the band goes in ear, you'll put a couple mics on stage for ambient sound so you can hear the audience, which is really a necessity....otherwise you'll feel cut off from the vibe.
Since we don't carry our own sound engineer (or monitor guy), it's just too painful dealing with the bonehead du jour with in ears.

Hi Rob,
Being you have done big tours do you have any experience with in-ears. I've heard it's the "best seat in the house" if it is dialed in properly. Very spendy I know get a quality system like this. I would sure give it a try if it was available to me. I currently use 2 JBL Eon G2 10's which I really like.
