Subject:Re: powered monitors

I'm using a pair of Yorkville 300K keyboard combos. I bought the last new one in their chain about 4 years ago for about $650. I bought one on ebay 2 years ago for $250. They're stereo keyboard amps, but you really don't get a good stereo field from one box. But just one of these amps does sound pretty loud, and yet remains clean and punchy. (They're 150 per side, with 2x10s and 2 small horns.) It uses a true stereo amp, and each speaker/horn assembly is in its own sealed baffle.

I just blew the ebay amp and there are no parts left in the system. I have sent it to Yorkville directly to see about getting it fixed. In the meantime, I've been looking at keyboard amps, and the selection is dismal. The Alesis stuff is built like junk, doesn't sound all that great; the Crate stuff is no better. While there are certain Behringer products I will use, their amps are not one of them. I may either replace the amp section of the Yorkville with a small Hafler power amp (the 2space cavity is only 13" deep, so my choices are very limited), or replace the entire box with another Yorkville combo. But they offer no stereo amps, but I'm looking for the stereo motion between the 2 boxes anyway.

I've used the Mackie SRM450s when overseas, and while they work ok, there's something about the sound I just don't agree with. Yamaha makes some decent powered boxes too in the 100watt and 300watt ranges that are less money than the Mackies, and I may consider those, or at least audition them.

Hope this helped....

I know this has been discussed in the past, but real quickly...

What powered monitors are you guy using for keyboard rigs that can REALLY compete in a
loud, rock setting? (I'm in a band with TWO guitar players.) I'm using a CX-3, plus other
keys/synths. I can go either mono or stereo, but I'm trying to keep it as compact and easy
to move as possible.

FYI, I tried a Roland KC-550 (15-inch, 180W) and it totally folded when really pushed to
loud, rock levels. It just distorted, compressed, and flabbed away in an awful manner. Tsk,
tsk.

Thanks,
Rob
